Nisar Khan (b. 1981) is serving as full Professor at the Faculty of Architecture & Ekistics, Jamia Millia Islamia since 2006. He is engaged in imparting education and research guidance at B.Arch., M.Arch., and Ph.D. level. His research interests are Heritage Cities and Informal Settlements. His Ph.D. is a study of the spatial and socio-economic aspects of the Unauthorised Colonies of Delhi.
During his tenure in Jamia, he conceptualized and initiated two M.Arch. programs with specialisation in Recreation Architecture and Urban Regeneration in the years 2008 and 2011 respectively. He is the coordinator of the M.Arch. program in Urban Regeneration for which he has also developed the course curriculum. This trans-disciplinary program is uniquely offered in JMI in the entire Asia.
He has formulated the syllabus for the course on Research Methodology for Ph.D. course work in Architecture discipline. He has supervised one Ph.D. on heritage economics and 05 Ph.D.'s are under supervision. He has supervised numerous theses and dissertations at B.Arch. and M.Arch. levels. Students mentored by him are working in acclaimed organisations and conducting research in premier institutes across the World.
Besides academic work, he is also a member of the IQAC working team of the university which worked on the NAAC A++ accreditation (2021) and NIRF ranking (3rd) among others. He is also the Startup Activity Coordinator for the university.
Research, Invited Lectures and Publications
Nisar Khan has published papers and articles on myriad topics of architecture and urbanisation in various refereed journals. Drawings prepared by him are published in the books published by Intach and Marg.
He has presented papers in various national and international conferences organised by reputed organisations like UNESCO, Government of Saudi Arabia, Government of Dubai, Government of Turkey, Ministry of Culture GOI, IGNCA, JNU etc. He has been invited to deliver lectures on architecture and urbanisation by institutions like SPA Delhi. SPA Bhopal, CPWD, INTACH, National Museum Institute, Council of Architecture, National Institute of Advanced Studies in Architecture, AJK Mass Communication and Research Centre, Dept of Sociology and UGC-HRDC at JMI.
Consultancy and Advisory
Nisar Khan has undertaken and completed various architecture and conservation consultancy projects for Govt. of Delhi, RITES, INTACH etc. He has been a member of the expert team advising the Government of Delhi to conduct Stakeholder consultation for the Jama Masjid Redevelopment Project in Delhi. He is also a member of the Heritage Cell at Aligarh Muslim University.
