The Department was granted Centre for Advanced Studies, the highest of the grants by University Grants Commission. The Department is the first amongst the Schools of Social Work in Central Universities in the country to receive this grant.

The CAS Phase-I was granted to the Department by UGC in 2010. Department repositioned itself in terms of initiatives and programmes that aimed at imparting academic inputs and advocated for the professional standards. All the initiatives and the programmes were interwoven with the thrust areas:

• Social Development and Human Resource Management.
• Competency Building, Research, Indigenous Literature Development

On the satisfactory completion of the first phase, the CAS Phase-II was granted to the Department in the year 2016 for a period of five years up to 2021.
