Message from the Dean of the Faculty
It is my delight to serve as Dean, Faculty of Humanities & Languages, Jamia Millia Islamia. Home to a large number of thriving undergraduate majors (Honours), M.A. and Ph.D. programmes, and a large number of Certificate and Diploma courses in Indian and foreign languages, this Faculty can boast of extraordinary, award-winning teachers, students from diverse backgrounds and cultural geographies who can pursue a line of study that interests them and chase their own dreams. Recently, the Faculty has implemented the CBCS under which students can sign up for courses across Faculties to enrich their portfolio. The Faculty can boast of Historians of the stature of Mushirul Hasan, Religious Studies Scholar of the stature of Ziaul Hasan Faruqi and Mushirul Haque, and creative writers like Asghar Wajahat, Mukul Kesavan, Abdul Bismillah, Ajay Navaria and Khalid Javed. Among the visiting scholars and writers-in-residence were Qurratulain Hyder, Shamsur Rahman Faruqi, Ralph Russell, Aijaz Ahmad, Alok Bhalla, Githa Hariharan, Lakshmi Kannan, Suvir Kaul, Robert Hamburger, Robert Rosenberg, Karen Waters, Farzana Doctor, Lakshmi Subramanian, Anjum Hasan and Annie Zaidi.
Three departments in the Faculty - English, History & Culture, and Urdu - are the recipients of the prestigious SAP-DRS grant of the University Grants Commission. This grant allows these departments to explore thrust areas of their choice, undertake cutting-edge research in those areas and produce new knowledge.
