Introduction

The teaching of subject Geography started in the University in 1958 by Late Prof. Qazi Mohammad Ahmad, and a full-fledged undergraduate Department was established by him in 1971. The department was upgraded to a PG department in 1984 followed by the introduction of Diploma in Remote Sensing and GIS Applications in 1994.

In recognition to the performance of the department in dissemination of the knowledge of geospatial technologies, the Department of Space (DoS) supported the establishment of a GIS/DIP Lab. Since then the department has been growing constantly as it always strived to sync in with the recent trends and developments in geography. DST accorded the status of FIST- Level-I in 2014 and sanctioned an amount of Rs. 72 lakh for strengthening the infrastructure of the department. The UGC too accorded the status of SAP-DRS –I in 2016 and sanctioned an amount Rs. 62 lakh for strengthening teaching and research in the thrust area of Urban and Social Environment.

Diploma in Disaster Management (Evening and Self Financed) was introduced in 2015, which was upgraded to PG Diploma in Disaster Management in 2018 and M.Sc Disaster Management and Climate Sustainability Studies (Self Financed) was started in 2018. All the courses offered are well taken by the academia and the industry.

The faculty members have published about 176 research papers in National and International Journal of repute during 2014-19 with citation of 2286 and h-index 28. A number of research projects have been sanctioned to the department by UGC, DST, ICSSR, NASA and Central Waqf Council, amounting to Rs 850 lakh. The department frequently organizes training workshops in Geospatial Technologies and Conference and Seminars. Presently there are about 450 students at UG and PG level and 50 students are pursuing research.
