Climate Action Plan
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is committed to becoming a leader in sustainability and combating climate change. With a vision to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, JMI aims to implement a comprehensive Climate Action Plan that addresses Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions. This plan is aligned with the ClimateSmart Cities Assessment Framework 2.0, focusing on sustainable development, energy efficiency, and carbon reduction strategies to create a campus that is not only environmentally responsible but also a model of sustainable living and learning.
(A) Targets
The Sustainability Committee shall set challenging targets for reduction of Scope-1, Scope-2 & Scope-3 emissions every year so as to achieve a net-zero emission target by 2070. The committee shall alo review the previous year performance and recommend corrective measures, if required.
(B) Strategies for reducing Scope-1,2,3 Emissions
(i) Strategies for reducing Scope-1 Emissions (Direct Emissions)(ii) Strategies for reducing Scope 2 Emissions (Indirect Emissions from Electricity Consumption)
- Implement energy efficiency measures in buildings, including retrofitting for improved insulation and lighting.
- Transition the campus fleet to electric vehicles (EVs) and adopt alternative fuels for remaining vehicles.
- Enhance waste management practices to reduce methane emissions from organic waste.
(iii) Strategies for reducing Scope 3 Emissions (Indirect Emissions from Supply Chain, Commuting, etc.)
- Wherever possible, install on-site solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on rooftops and available land for clean energy generation.
- Procure Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) or enter into Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with renewable energy providers.
- Implement energy storage solutions to optimize renewable energy use and reduce reliance on the grid.
- Promote sustainable commuting options such as cycling, public transport, and carpooling for students, faculty, and staff.
- Engage with suppliers to prioritize eco-friendly and locally sourced products, reducing embodied carbon in procurement.
- Implement a Green Procurement Policy that considers lifecycle emissions and environmental impact of purchased goods.
