Conservation of Flora and Fauna
Jamia Millia Islamia, nestled along the banks of the Jamuna River in South East Delhi, boasts a sprawling campus covering more than 250 acres. This expanse of land, rich in biodiversity, serves as a vital green lung for the bustling locality of Okhla. The university is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, with thousands of majestic trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants adorning every corner. Recognizing the ecological significance of our campus, we are committed to safeguarding and nurturing this natural treasure for the benefit of current and future generations through following policies:
(A) Protection and Conservation
(i) Our foremost objective is to protect and enhance the existing rich biodiversity of the Jamia Millia Islamia campus.
(ii) JMI shall establish a program to conserve and propagate indigenous plant species, ensuring their survival and increasing their presence across the campus.
(B) Cataloging and Preservation
(i) JMI shall continue to maintain a comprehensive catalog of trees and shrubs on the campus, detailing their species, age, and ecological significance.
(ii) Special focus shall be placed on preserving heritage trees and rare plant species, implementing provisions of the The Delhi Preservation of Trees Act (DPTA), 1994.
(C) Horticultural Maintenance
(i) The Horticulture Department shall be entrusted with the regular upkeep and maintenance of the green spaces across the campus.
(ii) Pruning, watering, fertilization, and pest control measures shall be carried out regularly to ensure the health and vitality of flora in the campus.
(D) Greenhouse Initiatives
(i) To promote sustainability and self-reliance, JMI shall establish greenhouses for cultivating organic vegetables and herbs.
(ii) These green spaces shall serve as educational tools, showcasing sustainable agriculture practices to students and campus residents.
(E) Herbal Gardens and Nurseries
(i) Herbal gardens shall be established within the university premises, showcasing a diverse range of medicinal plants and herbs.
(ii) These gardens will not only promote traditional herbal knowledge but also facilitate research and education in herbal medicine.
(F) Research and Development Labs
(i) State-of-the-art laboratories shall be set up to further research and development in biodiversity conservation.
(ii) Collaborative efforts with research institutions and government agencies shall be encouraged to drive innovation in environmental sustainability.
